Mining & Collapses

Introduction

Once you have located an ore vein you can begin excavating it for resources. However, there are some differences from base Mincraft to be aware of when mining. Such as Collapses, Supports, Hazardous Materials, and Processing.

Before starting, you should prepare the right equipment for the job. You will need a pickaxe or mining hammer to mine ores. A mining hammer has an advantage of breaking a 3x3 area of blocks at once.

A regular hammer can also break stone type blocks, but will not drop ores. It can still be useful for extracting raw stone, however.

Collapses

In TerraFirmaGreg, raw rock is unstable and susceptible to Collapsing. Many rock blocks, including Raw Rock, Ores, and Spikes can all rain down on your head under the right circumstances.

Support Beams can be used to prevent collapses from occurring.
When Ore blocks collapse, they will degrade into cobblestone.

Gravity

Dirt, grass, clay, gravel, cobblestone, and sand are also affected by gravity. However, unlike vanilla gravity blocks, these blocks fall down slopes, and cannot be stacked more than one high without supporting blocks around. Ore Deposits also landslide, but do not degrade in quality.

Support Beams

Support Beams can be crafted from logs or stone.

Placing a Support Beam on top of a block places a column up to three tall. These must have a solid block beneath them to stay upright.
Horizontal beams can be placed between to connect two Vertical beams that are within five blocks, as in the above diagram.

TIP: You can use wooden vertical support beams with higher quality horizontal support beams like concrete.

Only Horizontal Support Beams cause nearby blocks to be Supported. Any block within a 9 x 5 x 9 area centered on a horizontal support beam is considered Supported.

In addition to being supported by support beams, rock can be supported simply by the virtue of having a solid block below it, such as more rock. However, it is important to note that Non-Solid Blocks such as Stairs and Slabs, along with Smooth Stone, do not count as supporting.

Support Area

The protection area of the support is centered on the horizontal support beam. Vertical supports make no impact.

Block Range

When mined, individual blocks have their own range check for triggering collapses, up to 7x7x7, shown by the red/yellow area centered on the stone.

Pass Condition
tfg:textures/gui/field_guide/supports/support_2d_pass.png

When mining the highlighted block, no collapse can occur because all free space (yellow area) is protected by the support (green area).

Fail Condition

However, when there are unsupported blocks outside the support area, mining the highlighted block may cause a collapse even though it itself is supported.

Higher Tiers

In addition to basic Wooden and stone Support Beams, TFG also adds higher tiers of support beams, including Concrete Support Beams, Steel Support Beams, and Reinforced Concrete Support Beams. The highest tier of supports holds an area of 33 x 13 x 33 blocks centered on the horizontal support beam!
Support area can be viewed in the support beams tooltip.

Tips

Finally, it is important to know that Chiseling has the potential to cause collapses, just as easily as mining does, when it is done on any Raw Rock that has potential to cause a nearby collapse.

If you are still struggling with collapses, consider watching this Guide.

There are multiple forms of explosives in TFG for various purposes.

  • TNT: Medium sized explosive.
  • Dynamite: Throwable, low-power explosive.
  • Powderbarrel: Large explosive.
  • Powderkeg: Extremely powerful explosive at full strength. Scales with the quantity of stored gunpowder.
Basic Ore Processing

You should always process your ores for better yields. You can start this process very early on.
The first step is to use a Quern to crush raw ore. This step can be automated in the future with improved machines such as the Millstone, Crushing Wheel, Macerator, and Forge Hammer.

Purifying Dust

To make your crushed ores melt into even more mB, first place them in a crafting grid along with a Hammer to produce Impure Dust. To purify the dust, throw it in water or a barrel filled with water.
This final dust can yield around 4x the quantity of metal when melted compared to raw ore.
