Clothing is a type of equipment that provides effects other than armor.
Most clothes affect your player temperature, but others can provide additional, useful effects.

Click the circular button on the top left of your character portrait to open the menu.
Clothing can be worn in your normal equipment slots, but it can also be worn in your Curios slots to wear other equipment at the same time.
This menu also has slots for things like a backpack or tool belt.
The first item of clothing you can craft is a simple Straw Hat, made of straw. It protects you from direct sunlight.
Naked and freezing in the arctic? The primitive set of clothing is very easy to craft, only needing some straw and some raw hides. Perfect for your caveman chic!
Primitive clothes have very low warmth, insulation, and durability, but they should buy you enough time to find something better.

Insulated Leather clothes are the next step up from your caveman cosplay. They only require some Leather armor, plus either raw wool or feathers.
The Leather Apron provides a lot of insulation, but no warmth or cooling. Perfect for working in front of a forge!
For stronger, longer-term protection, you'll want to look at making some proper clothes out of various cloths. Wool and Cotton clothes will warm you up, while Linen, Burlap, and Silk clothes will cool you down.
These have a bigger up-front investment, but have a lot more durability and can be cheaply repaired.
The hides and furs of various animals can be used to create some of the strongest clothing in TFG, boasting the best stats and durability of anything else. They all have different stats depending on how difficult they are to obtain, or where you would find the corresponding animal.
For example, crocodile clothing will cool you down, while a caribou parka would be nice and toasty.
The strongest cooling clothes will require a trip to somewhere quite hot...
These can also all be easily repaired.
Lastly, some advanced armors will also provide full insulation from the outside world, preventing your player temperature from going lower than 5°C or above 25°C.

Are your clothes looking too plain?
Just like armor, Armor Trims can be applied to most clothing too.
