Growing Crops

All crops need to be planted on farmland in order to grow. Some crops have additional requirements such as being waterlogged or requiring a stick to grow on.

Crops do not need nutrients to grow, but they certainly help. There are three nutrients: Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium. Each crop has a favorite nutrient.

Consuming its favorite nutrient causes a crop to grow faster, and improves the yield of the crop at harvest time. That means that crops that consumed more nutrients drop more food when broken! Consuming a nutrient also has the effect of replenishing the other nutrients around it a small amount.
Every crop has a different Temperature and Hydration requirement. You can find each crops climate range in [Wild Crops] or in its item tooltip.

When crops are planted without sufficient hydration or outside their temperature range the crop will die. If a crop reaches full maturity before dying it will yield excess seeds. You can kill a crop with Rotten Compost to purposefully duplicate its seeds. Crops planted in Greenhouse Planters are not capable of dying and will automatically provide bonus seeds.

Hydration

Hydration is a measure of the % water available for the crop. Different crop types calculate their hydration differently.

  • Crop and Berry Bush hydration is affected by both local rainfall and proximity to fresh water.
  • To be very specific you can calculate crop hydration by following: (60 * rainfall / 500) + 20 * (5 - waterCost) where waterCost is the distance to fresh water from 1-5

  • Hydration for Fruit Trees, Palm Fruit Trees, and Bananas is calculated with: rainfall / 5

Grapes do not have a hydration requirement. Submerged crops like rice and cranberries also have no hydration requirement since... well... they are submerged in water.
Growing Grapes

Grapes must be grown on trellises constructed from posts and jute fiber. To construct a trellis, place two posts vertically. Then, leaving a one block gap construct another post to the left or right. Right Click the top and bottom posts with Jute Fiber to string lines between the posts. Finally plant a grape seed in the space between the posts on dirt or soil. Grape trellises can be chained horizontally to create rows of grapes.

A grape trellis.

Provided the Temperature requirements are satisfied, the grape vine will grow up and over the trellis over the course of a few months. It will fruit in the month of July, flowering the month prior. Grapes can then be harvested and used to produce Wine.

Grape plants will not die even when they are outside their temperature range. But they will go dormant and won't produce any fruit until they are back to the right temperature.
